Toyota Case study Essay Example for Free
Toyota Case study Essay Jalopnik The crisis: Toyota recalled a total of 8.8 million vehicles for safety defects, including a problem where the cars accelerator would jam, which caused multiple deaths. How Toyota responded: Toyota initially couldnt figure out the exact problem, but it sent out PR teams to try and stop the media backlash anyway. The upper management was invisible in the early stages of the crisis, skewing public perception further against the company. Toyotas response was slow, with devastating results. But it served as a wake-up call for the company, which somehow turned it around in the months following the debacle. The company failed miserably in its initial crisis management, but thats what makes Toyotas case so intriguing. Despite its monumental mistakes early on, Toyota still bounced back. Why? It didnt take long for the public to remember Toyotas previously stellar reputation. The company offered extended warranties and pumped up marketing, leveraging its long-term track record and reassuring consumers about safety. Its ads in the following months were more thoughtful and sincere, showing the companys dedication to fixing the problem. Toyotas executives especially in the US became more visible, speaking to the media and becoming active in the investigations. The result: The Toyota brand showcased its resiliency, with its positive reputation built up over decades of good performance. The company leveraged this, focusing its marketing once again on safety and its proven track record. It had to show that this disaster including its own horrible mishandling of the situation was an aberration. And it worked, with a little bit a of luck. NASA exonerated Toyota of the blame for most of the accidents in 2011 and the companys brand equity leapt 11% this year, according to WPP.

Linux Security Essay Example for Free
Linux Security Essay While researching the regulatory requirements needed for First World Bank Savings and Loans I found that a security policy against current server architecture is required to be implemented. The CIA (Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability) triad is taken into account when analyzing the multiple servers in reference to Linux and Open Source managing security demands. The Database Server requires the administrators go further in terms of technical design through a Linux architecture method. MySQL can be utilized as a backend and comes with script availability to remove test databases, lower systems and data base privileges (Jang, 2011). This method will allow successful requirement of all networking layers. The Apache Web Server allows the ability to harden the Linux kernel within Apache (Prashant, 2013). The patch available is grsecurity and allows protection against zero-day vulnerabilities while utilizing ksplice to update the kernal on time (Prashant, 2013). Samba is used for the file server and has many features to restrict access to what is shared. This includes enforcing password requirements, filtering at the network level, and a check going against group memberships (Jang, 2011). The SMTP server will be Sendmail. Sendmail comes with the security feature of encrypting the connection (Jang, 2011). We will also need a virus scanning program to ensure mail coming in does not have virus attachments. The LDAP server will be utilized as the central authentication server so that the involved users have a login that is unified and covers all console logins (LDAP NExt, 2010). Works Cited Jang, M. Recruiting Local Nationals in Expatriate Security Companies
Recruiting Local Nationals in Expatriate Security Companies Title Sustained outbreaks of violence in different areas of the world have opened up extensive opportunities for specialised security companies. One of the greatest challenges facing expatriate security companies in hostile regions concerns the recruitment of local people for security operations. With the dissertation focusing on this particular area, it is proposed to title the assignment as follows: Challenges and Complexities ofà Recruitment of Local Nationals in Expatriate Security Companies in Hostile Regions:à A study with reference to the position in Iraq Aims and Objectives Hopes of a peaceful denouement to the violence ridden situation in Iraq evaporated within weeks of the US organised invasion of the country in March 2003. More than five years after the invasion, (which was followed by the installation of an elected government), acts of violence continue to be regular and widespread. Initial hopes among observers, as well as of corporate managements interested in participating in the rebuilding of the devastated country, of the military coalition taking up the responsibility for maintaining peace and ensuring an environment conducive to growth and development have been belied by the large scale violence that has continued to occur in the region and the helplessness of the overstretched occupying forces in controlling it. The inadequacy of the military in controlling risks and minimising danger to civilian life and property in Iraq have opened up a window of opportunity for numerous western security companies who have entered the area and are now actively involved in providing a range of security services to local and international as well as private and government organisations. ââ¬Å"The private military and security companies that have stepped into this security vacuum range from large, relatively well-known concerns such as DynCorp and Vinnell of the US, which are training the new Iraqi police and army respectively to smaller operations such as Olive Security of the UK. ââ¬ËThere is quite a bit of business out there,ââ¬â¢ says Harry Legge-Bourke, for Olive. ââ¬ËFrom our point of view, it just gets better all the time.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Catan and Fidler, 2003) Whilst the majority of these expatriate security companies depend extensively on westerners, mostly people with experience in military, para-military and police functions, to man their key positions, local Iraqi nationals are increasingly being drafted into these organisations. Iraqis are far cheaper than expatriates to recruit and employ, possess valuable knowledge about local customs, traditions and cultures, speak the local language, and are often far more acceptable to the local population than foreigners. Many of them are also extremely suitable for the responsibilities needed for jobs in security agencies. Recruitment of local nationals is however also associated with a number of problems, namely the possibility of infiltration of security companies by people with disruptive intentions, the lack of adequate training of prospective employees, the possibility of such employees being intimidated by insurgents, and the likelihood of their being seen as collaborators by members of their community. Very obviously recruitment of local Iraqis by expatriate security companies in Iraq, though essential for their success and effectiveness, is an extremely complex and multifaceted task. This assignment aims to study the topic of recruitment of local nationals by expatriate security companies in Iraq in detail, delving into the causes of their problems, the likely impact of such problems on the operations of security companies, client needs and demands, the options available to security companies in the recruitment of local employees, and the actions being taken by them to overcome various challenges. A dissertation of this nature, along with its findings and recommendations, could be instructive and informative for all people associated with the running or utilisation of security companies, especially so in hostile or violence prone regions. Managements of companies intending to set up operations in such areas could also find it helpful in shaping their perspectives and in crystallising their plans. Methodology Much of the information required for this dissertation will need to be obtained from available material on the subject; books, journal articles, research assignments, and magazine and newspaper articles. With the post war phase in Iraq having entered its fifth year, substantial material has already been generated, both online and by way of hard copy publications. It is proposed to base this dissertation primarily on a detailed study of available literature on the running of large and small security companies, their challenges and opportunities, the evolution of the post war situation in Iraq, the security situation in the region, the complexities of local cultures, traditions and customs, the challenges associated with the running and staffing of security companies in the region, the issues involved in recruiting and utilising local staff, and the actual actions of security companies in the region. Whilst substantial information is available on the topic and it is proposed to access and use the same for the purpose of the dissertation, the assignment will be aided greatly if primary information can be obtained from managers of security companies operating in Iraq and other such disturbed areas. Endeavour will accordingly be made to secure appointments with managers in such agencies for obtaining relevant data. A number of books and articles, listed in the references section at the end of the assignment, have already been accessed on the topic. Articles by Flores and Earl (2004), Cole (2004), and Catan and Fidler (2003) have been illuminating. The book ââ¬Å"Private Military and Security Companies, Chances, Problems, Pitfalls and Prospectsâ⬠by Jager and Kummel (2007), being anthological in nature and containing a full chapter devoted to Iraq, has been particularly helpful in increasing my understanding of the subject. Substantial additional information, currently under mining, is also proposed to be used for the purpose of the dissertation. Time Plan Whilst a certain amount of information has already been accessed, I propose to devote a significant proportion of the time at my disposal to obtaining additional information and collating it coherently for the dissertation. I shall also make efforts to obtain at least a couple of interviews with managers of security companies with operations in difficult and hostile foreign terrain. The rest of the time at my disposal will be devoted to writing up the dissertation, which will consist of finalising the research hypothesis, writing a coherent and well structured Literature Review and the putting together (if possible) of the interview transcripts; this shall be followed by detailing the methodology, arriving at the findings, analysing the same, testing the hypothesis, and coming to conclusions and recommendations. I plan to devote 10 % of the time available to revision, self-assessment, corrections, and smoothening out the dissertation. The next section details the structure I propose to follow for the purpose of the dissertation. Structure I plan to follow an orthodox dissertation structure, beginning with a short and concise abstract, followed by the table of contents. The body of the dissertation is proposed to be divided into the introduction, methodology, literature review, findings and analysis, conclusion and recommendations, appendices and tables, and the bibliography. The introduction will consist of an overview section followed by the framing of the research hypotheses. In the literature review I propose to devote separate sections to the origin and growth of the security services business, connected human resource issues, problems in hostile and violence prone foreign settings, and staffing including recruitment and utilisation of local personnel. The next section will focus on findings and analysis. The concluding chapter will be devoted to drawing conclusions, detailing recommendations and laying down the limitations of the assignment. Rogerââ¬â¢s Theory as compared to that of Ellisââ¬â¢ Theory Essay -- Psycholog
Anderson (n.d) states, ââ¬Å"Carl Rogers, a pioneering psychotherapist and the most influential psychologist in American history was one of the most prominent people of his time.â⬠Rogersââ¬â¢ ideas and practices brought about a change in the school of humanistic psychology. What he learned in philosophy and philosophy of education influenced his personal life experiences which led him to a revolutionary of theory of therapy (Corsini, 2011 p. 148). According to an electrical resource, Client ââ¬âcentered therapy is a form of talk psychotherapy developed by psychologist Carl Rogers in 1940s and 1950s (ââ¬Å"PCTâ⬠, n.d.). Certainly, Rogersââ¬â¢ non-directive approach to client- centered therapy focused on the importance of individual feelings and perceptions of self in the present. Rogers believed that this process increased understanding of self-awareness within the client. If the clients can identify, fully accept, and clarify feelings in their conscious, it wil l help them to determine the solution to their own problem. Since Carl Rogers was the one the first influential therapist, Alert Ellis became the second most influential therapist of all times in cognitive behavior therapy. Ellis developed a theory called Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) in the mid-1950s. Wikipedia (n.d.) explain this theory as , ââ¬Å"A comprehensive, activeââ¬âdirective, philosophically and empirically based psychotherapy which focuses on resolving emotional and behavioral problem and disturbances and enabling people to lead happier and more fulfilling lives.â⬠Unlike client-centered therapy, Ellis active-directive approach to rational emotive behavior therapy focused on The ABCD technique. This ABCD framework is defined as: (A) activating even not from an emotion, (B) bel... ... (Corsini, 2011 p. 153). However, rational emotive behvior therapist provided much direction, whereas the person centered approach encourages the client to determine direction (Corsini, 2011 p. 153). Furthermore, Rogers emphasize the conditions of a personââ¬â¢s right freely express themselves in solving their own problems. However, Ellis theory pays attention to the development of thoughts and emotions people experience. Similar, outcomes are evident in both client-centered therapy and rational emotive behavior therapy after the patients have received valuable assistance. The clients continue to show growth and healing in their conscious as they revealed about lifeââ¬â¢s current problems. Likewise, Rogers and Ellis neither focused the patients past lifestyle or relied on unconscious. The clients were able to gain a sense of self-awareness at the end of the therapy.

The American Revolution was largely economic and political in nature. The political reasons were that England neglected the colonies, taxation without representation and limitation of individual rights and privacy. Then there was the most important side the economic. There was trade restriction, mercantilism, and taxation. On the economic side of the revolution colonist acknowledged that natural laws should govern their economy. But only the southern colonies were bound to England in connection with tobacco trade. Outside of the southern colonies they made their way by trading outside the empire. And if they wanted to put this trade to a stop there would be a rebellion. Then mercantilism, which was the idea of directing all trade through England, was a restriction upon economic prosperity of New England colony. The major reason for this all is that the colonies gave up to England. England then taxed it colonies with many acts. Such as the Stamp Act passed in 1765 and led by prime Minster George Greenville, which affected every colonist. It imposed a tax on all legal documents like newspapers and marriage licenses. Other acts like Currency Act, which banned all paper currency, the Sugar Act in efforts to try to reduce smuggling. In 1776 William Pitt took over he was a popular in the colonies. He opposed things like the Stamp Act and thought colonist had the same rights as English citizens. But after suddenly becoming sick Charles Townsend took over and he was not concerned with the rights of the colonist and he just wanted to strengthen the Parliament. And he then convinced Parliament to pass a series of new laws taxing lead, paint, paper, glass, and tea imported by colonists. Then Sam Adams spoke out and said that Parliament was taxing illegally and the majority of the colonists agreed and a boycott started on British goods. And because of the Currency Act they left paper practically worthless. This is the main reason for the revolution. Then there was the political side, which was not as important leader into the American Revolution but still a key role that led into the revolution. The taxation without representation was one of the major reasons that led to the revolution. The British were taxing the colonies and they had no way of standing up for themselves. They had no representation in England so they were unable to stop any taxes or polices coming over from them. The plea of taxation without representation is how the colonists stood up to acts like the Stamp Act. The colonies were being neglected from England. They left them

German Government Officials in WWII :: European History World War II
German Government Officials in WWII Many people have contributed to the cruel treatment of human beings, specifically Jews, in Nazi Germany during the second World War. This is a report on the damage carried out by some of the Nazi criminals working under the rule of Adolf Hitler. Many people contributed in Hitler's attempt to carry out his 'Final Solution'. Among these people are Ernst Roehm, Joseph Goebbels, Adolf Himmler, and Hermann Wilhelm Goering. While I discuss how they partook in World War Two, keep in mind their actions will, and have, left a mark on the world forever. Little is known about Ernst Roehm's childhood. He was a quiet boy who never went looking for trouble and didn't express hatred towards anyone, mostly because his parents were Libertarians and never paid attention to the politics in Germany's heartland. In college, Hitler's ideas and notions had a strong impact on Roehm's personality. Though Roehm never graduated, he joined the Free Corps, a group of soldiers dedicated to changing injustices in the German government. After a while, Roehm started to grow tired of the Free Corp's non- violent style, and he was tempted to be more of an activist in government reform. Hitler, looking to recruit fellow officers in his plan, then in it's infancy, liked Roehm's strong presence and personality. Roehm, jobless and nowhere to go, joined Hitler's office. After Hitler was elected into office some years later, he split his dictatorship into different divisions. Roehm, being one of the original officers, was chosen as head of the Sturmabteilung, or SA, commonly referred to as the Brownshirts and storm-troopers. By 1932, the Brownshirts had reached more than 400,000 members. All types of men who Hitler saw fit enough to join were members. Among them were ex-Free Corps soldiers like Roehm, students who weren't able to find jobs, shopkeepers who went out of business or weren't profitable enough, the unemployed, uneducated, and common criminals. As you can see, they were a very diverse bunch. Roehm had full power over where they demonstrated and protested. What was their cause? None really. They were merely an idea of Hitler's to spread his popularity, as well as the Nazi Party's. They roamed the streets of Munich, often drunk, singing racist stanzas from songs, beating anyone they thought, judging just from appearance who they thought was a Jew or a Communist. Roehm screamed to the marching storm-troopers, "We

Succubus on Top CHAPTER 12
ââ¬Å"Thetis,â⬠he said after several more moments of silence, ââ¬Å"talk to me here.â⬠I looked up sharply. ââ¬Å"What do you want me to say? You already know the answer. They wouldn't lie. Well, actually, they lie all the time but not about something like that.â⬠He nodded and set the bowl and spoon on the coffee table. Slouching back on the couch, he didn't look at me, instead staring off across the room in thought. I could guess what was going through his mind. He knew what I was and what I did. But it was one thing to have a superficial knowledge of it and another to suddenly know there was tangible evidence each time I had sex. He would recognize the glow now and know that I had just come from someone else's bed, that not so long ago I'd been in someone else's arms doing the most intimate things two people could do. Things I couldn't do with him. ââ¬Å"I'm sorry,â⬠I said, not knowing what else I could say. ââ¬Å"For what?â⬠ââ¬Å"Forâ⬠¦this. For doing what I do.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why? It is what you do. It's what you have to do, right? There's no need to apologize for your ownâ⬠¦uh, nature.â⬠ââ¬Å"Soâ⬠¦what? You're okay with that? Knowing what I'm doing with other guys? Or rather, when I'm doing it?â⬠ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËOkay' is a funny word, but yeah, I guess. What I'm not okay with isâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He paused, as always considering his words before speaking. ââ¬Å"What I'm not okay with is you being afraid to tell me about this. You must have seen howâ⬠¦entrancedâ⬠¦I was. But you never brought it up or explained it to me.â⬠ââ¬Å"What was I supposed to say? ââ¬ËThanks for noticing how pretty I am. It's because I just went down on some stranger in a sleazy club.'â⬠Seth flinched, and I immediately regretted my example. ââ¬Å"Maybeâ⬠¦maybe it could be phrased a bit more, uh, tactfully than that, but yeah. I guess essentially that's what you could tell me.â⬠I poked at the melted remains of my ice cream. ââ¬Å"It's not that easy, and you know it. It's got to be hard enough for you to accept that I'm sleeping around on you, so to speak, without real evidence to confirm each time it happens.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why don't you let me decide what I can or can't accept.â⬠He didn't sound angry exactly, but I'd never heard him so sharp and assertive. The arrogant part of me didn't like being spoken to like that, but I knew he was justified in the comment. And, I had to admit, that confidence was kind of a turn-on. Alpha males. Yum. ââ¬Å"I know what you are,â⬠he continued, ââ¬Å"and I know what you do. I had to acknowledge that from the beginning of the relationship. It bothers me, yeah, but that doesn't mean I can't go on with the knowledge.â⬠He laid his hand over mine, his fingertips absentmindedly stroking my skin. ââ¬Å"But you can't be afraid to tell me the truth. Not ever. Even if it's ugly. What we have isn't about sex ââ¬â like that wasn't already perfectly obvious. But if we don't have honesty either, then there's nothing left.â⬠I forced my eyes up to him and smiled. ââ¬Å"How can you be so young and so wise at the same time?â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm not that wise,â⬠he said, pulling me to him so I leaned against his shoulder. He didn't challenge the ââ¬Å"youngâ⬠comment. Looking at our ages objectively, one could practically accuse me of cradle robbing. I sighed and snuggled into him. ââ¬Å"It means nothing, you know. All that stuff I do. I don't even remember their names.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know. You've told me. Althoughâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"What?â⬠ââ¬Å"Sometimes that's not exactly comforting. Sex isn't supposed to be about ââ¬Ënothing.' I don't really like the idea of you being with guys you don't want to be with. Even if you're technically my girlfriendâ⬠¦I'd rather you at least liked what was going on. ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Wellâ⬠¦in the ultimate heat of it, I sort of do like it. The energy I get from sexâ⬠¦well, you can't really understand it. But itâ⬠¦it's literally what I live for. So even if I don't want to be with someone before and after the deed, there's still that one moment, no matter how brief, when I want them.â⬠I tried to give him a reassuring smile. ââ¬Å"Besides, don't feel too bad for me. Things are a lot better than they used to be. I have more of a choice about who I'm with now, which makes a big difference. It's not like I just take whoever comes along.â⬠ââ¬Å"What do you mean you have a choice now} Haven't you always?â⬠I laughed uneasily. ââ¬Å"Oh, come on, Seth. You know women didn't start getting any real rights until about a century ago. Men haven't always been kind or considerate in their relations with the fair sex ââ¬â especially those in the lower classes.â⬠He stared at me, shocked, and pulled back a little. I loved how expressive those eyes were, even if their current emotion wasn't exactly positive. ââ¬Å"You're talking aboutâ⬠¦itâ⬠¦it sounds an awful lot like rape.â⬠I shrugged, immediately realizing we needed to steer out of these waters. ââ¬Å"It's hard to rape a succubus. In the ultimate climax, the succubus is the conqueror ââ¬â especially if the guy ends up blacking out.â⬠ââ¬Å"You aren't really answering my question.â⬠ââ¬Å"And you aren't really asking it.â⬠We lapsed into silence. A moment later Seth took me back into a tight embrace, burying his face in my shoulder this time. ââ¬Å"Hey, now. Don't let it bother you. Don't judge the past by the standards of today. It won't work. They're incompatible.â⬠ââ¬Å"I don't like the idea of you doing things you don't want to do,â⬠he said gruffly. ââ¬Å"I wish I could do somethingâ⬠¦wish I could, I don't know, protect you.â⬠ââ¬Å"You can't,â⬠I whispered, kissing the crown of his head. ââ¬Å"You can't, and you have to accept that.â⬠We went to bed together after that, the first time since the kissing incident. Seth held me tightly all night, even in his sleep, clinging as though I might slip away if he let go. Again, I marveled at his understanding. And again, I questioned whether I was in love yet. How would I know? What was love anyway? I ticked off a list as my hands held tightly to his back. Affection. Connection. Understanding. Acceptance. All these things he gave me. Those were parts of love. All these things he offered freely, no matter how terrible each new discovery about me was. I wondered whether I returned as much as I received. Did I have any right to be in this relationship? Somehow I doubted it, yet it made me want him all the more. When we drove to the bookstore the next morning, he held my hand with a thrilling possessiveness. He didn't let go until we actually cleared the bookstore's door. ââ¬Å"Did Doug come in today?â⬠I asked Beth after I'd made a sweep of the store. ââ¬Å"Yeah. He was here earlier. I think he's in your office.â⬠I walked to the back. The office was dark. When I turned on the light, I found him hunched in a corner, his body curled up in a tight ball. I immediately dropped down beside him. ââ¬Å"What's wrong?â⬠After several seconds, he lifted his eyes up to mine. They were dark and troubled. ââ¬Å"Nothing.â⬠To contradict him seemed both obvious and pointless. ââ¬Å"What can I do to help?â⬠He laughed bitterly, a terrible sound. ââ¬Å"Don't you get it, Kincaid? Nothing helps, that's the problem. There's no point to any of this. You know that as well as I do.â⬠ââ¬Å"Do I?â⬠He gave me a cynical smile. ââ¬Å"You're one of the most depressed people I know. Even when you're smiling and flirting and all of that. I know you hate this life. This world. I know you think it's all stupid. ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Not true. There's good in the bad. There's always hope. What's gotten into you?â⬠ââ¬Å"Just reality, that's all. Just woke up and realized how stupid it all is. Dunno why I even bother.â⬠I touched his arm. ââ¬Å"Hey, you're kind of freaking me out here. Did you get any sleep? Do you need something to eat?â⬠He leaned back against the wall, face still bleak and full of snide humor. ââ¬Å"Kincaid, I need so many fucking things, it's not even funny. But you know what? We don't get them. That's how it is. What's that saying? Life is brutish and short?â⬠ââ¬Å"Erâ⬠¦close enough.â⬠I sat there with him for a long time, listening to him go on. His words were an outpouring of bitter anger and black despair. A frightening combination. I'd never heard him like this. Not upbeat Doug, always ready with a joke. Doug, the guy who never took anything seriously. His bleak face reminded me of Casey's when I'd found her in the caf?à ¦, but she hadn't been this down. As the clock ticked, I wondered what I should do. He certainly couldn't work today, yet I feared sending him home. Who knew what he might do in this mood? Previously, I would never have worried about him hurting himself, but all bets seemed to be off now. ââ¬Å"I want you to stay here,â⬠I finally said, standing up and straightening the kinks out of my legs. ââ¬Å"I've got to get back out there, but I'm going to check on you later, okay? Promise you'll find me if you need me. We'll eat lunch later on. I'll get us some falafels from that place you like.â⬠He only gave me a twisted half-smile, face stormy and mocking. I left, taking the letter opener with me. His mood didn't change as the day wore on; even the falafels did no good. Once more, I wondered desperately what I should do. He had no family in the city I could call. I knew the hospitals had psych emergency services; should I contact one of them? Shortly after lunch, Alec showed up. He avoided Casey's pleading eyes and gave me a smile that tried too hard. ââ¬Å"Hey Georgina, is Doug around?â⬠I hesitated. I didn't like Alec, but he was sort of Doug's friend. Maybe that would help. I led the drummer to the back. When Doug saw him, he leapt up with an astounding burst of energy, his face both desperate and rapt. ââ¬Å"Jesus Christ, man! Where have you been?â⬠ââ¬Å"Sorry,â⬠said Alec. ââ¬Å"I got held up.â⬠They huddled together, then looked uneasily over at me. Sensing I was unwanted, I backed out of the office but not before I saw Alec reaching into his coat and Doug looking very eager. It was Alec, I realized. Alec was feeding Doug whatever drug he was addicted to. The realization made me want to go in there and throttle him, wipe that stupid grin off his face. Yet, when the two emerged a half hour later, the change in Doug was so marked that I couldn't bring myself to act. A swagger had returned to his step, the normal cheery grin back on his face. Janice passed by, and he made some playful remark that caused her to laugh. Seeing me, he pranced up and saluted. ââ¬Å"Ready for duty, boss. What do you have for me?â⬠ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ I stared stupidly, which only made him smile more. ââ¬Å"Rein it in, Kincaid,â⬠he said with mock severity. ââ¬Å"I know that as a good groupie, you're ready to take me anytime, anywhere. But, as literary professionals, we've got to control our passion until after hours.â⬠I was still staring. ââ¬Å"Umâ⬠¦why don't you, uh, grab a register?â⬠He saluted again and clicked his heels together, military style. ââ¬Å"Can do.â⬠He turned to Alec. ââ¬Å"I'll see you at the rehearsal tonight?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yup.â⬠Doug flashed both of us a grin, then sauntered off. I stood there alone with Alec. He waited expectantly, like I was supposed to say something. The words ââ¬Å"fuck offâ⬠seemed appropriate, but I changed my mind. I smiled at him. It was a slow, sweeping smile that started with my lips and then shone in my eyes, the kind of smile that said I'd just noticed something I'd never seen before. Something I suddenly liked ââ¬â and wanted. Alec's own smile faltered. I think hitting on me had become so automatic, he didn't expect a response anymore. He swallowed and then turned his own grin back on. ââ¬Å"A rehearsal, huh?â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"You guys got another show coming up?â⬠ââ¬Å"Next weekend. You going to come?â⬠ââ¬Å"I'll try. Are you going to have another party after?â⬠ââ¬Å"Probably. Wyatt's having one tomorrow if you wanna go to that.â⬠ââ¬Å"Are you going to be there?â⬠I asked silkily, catching his eye meaningfully. ââ¬Å"You bet.â⬠ââ¬Å"Then I'll be there.â⬠I turned to go, still giving him the hypnotic smile. ââ¬Å"See you then.â⬠As soon I was out of his sight, my smile lapsed into a grimace. Ack. I hadn't thought it was possible to loathe that guy anymore, but I'd been proven wrong once again. Still, flirting with him, I'd realized, might be the best way to figure out what was going on with Doug. I felt pretty sure Alec had tried to push whatever he had on Casey. If I appeared to fall prey to his so-called charm too, he might let me share in the goods. Doug, as I soon discovered, certainly wasn't going to provide any help in the matter. ââ¬Å"You've got something,â⬠I teased later when he and I ran into each other in the fantasy books. I gave him the lethal smile. He returned it. ââ¬Å"Magnetism? Sex appeal? Intelligence? Babe, I've got it all.â⬠I stepped forward and pulled playfully on his shirt, looking up into his face. ââ¬Å"That's not what I mean. You've got something good, something you aren't sharing.â⬠He stayed close to me and tugged on a lock of my hair in return. ââ¬Å"Don't know what you're talking about.â⬠ââ¬Å"The hell you don't. Do you know how many hours I've been working for you and Paige lately? Good lord. It's driving me crazy. Grey Goose only goes so far. If you've got some stash, you need to spread the love.â⬠ââ¬Å"Hey, I'll spread as much love as you want. Name the time and place.â⬠ââ¬Å"I thought we were friends.â⬠I pushed lightly on his chest and stepped back with a pout. ââ¬Å"You're holding out on me. No way could you have perked up so quickly. Not after how you were this morning. You took something. ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Bah, mood swing. You're a woman; you understand. Just woke up grumpy, that's all. A little falafel and some Kincaid charm, and now I'm good to go. Great even.â⬠He took a step back toward me, apparently hoping I'd renew the flirtation. Heat burned in his eyes, something a little darker and more intense than our typical bantering called for. ââ¬Å"In fact, I'm downright unstoppable now. A god, babe. Come on back to the office, and I'll show you.â⬠I walked away, giving him a taunting look over my shoulder, still playing it light. ââ¬Å"Not my religion, babe.â⬠He laughed as I left him. We'd been flirting for years, and I knew he'd probably take no offense at my teasing or baiting. I, on the other hand, was pissed. Bad enough this shit of Alec's could push Doug into over-the-top exuberance and inappropriate behavior at work. Dragging him into the pits of despair, however, was an entirely different matter. I was going to find out what was going on and put an end to it ââ¬â even if it meant cozying up to that sleaze, Alec. Remembering one of the other complications in my life right now, I called Bastien later that night for a status check. ââ¬Å"Don't even ask, Fleur .The clouds of failure are gathering.â⬠ââ¬Å"What the hell is it with you depressed guys today? Why do I have to be everyone's goddamned cheering-up committee?â⬠I ordered him to drive to Queen Anne immediately. When he arrived, he was still whining. ââ¬Å"Dana's being really nice to me,â⬠he conceded, ââ¬Å"but nothing intimate. She can't ever come over alone either. She's always got Jody with her or some other CPFV freak. My odds are probably better at getting her sidekicks into bed as a group than ever nailing her. They're all trying to get me to join their cult. I suppose making the gesture can't hurt, but I think I'll see more of her if I pretend to be a hesitant convert. You know, she also asks about you a lot.â⬠ââ¬Å"Like what?â⬠ââ¬Å"Random stuff. Last time she wanted to know how the clothes you bought were working out. What's that about?â⬠ââ¬Å"Not a clue,â⬠I lied. It was ironic, really, because just then Bastien noticed the Victoria's Secret bag still sitting on my counter. My privacy apparently not a concern, he emptied it out and looked through the lingerie with approval. ââ¬Å"You want to try something on?â⬠I asked wryly, noting his scrutiny. ââ¬Å"You always did have good taste.â⬠He held up the black mesh bra and peered at me through it, as though imagining how it would look on. ââ¬Å"Although I still don't know why you buy this stuff. Just shape-shift it.â⬠ââ¬Å"I have a respect for ââ¬Ëintellectual property.' Whoever designed this deserves their pay.â⬠ââ¬Å"Even if it was constructed by third-world labor?â⬠I made a face. ââ¬Å"Come on, let's get out of here.â⬠ââ¬Å"Where to?â⬠ââ¬Å"A piano bar.â⬠Surprise put his malaise on hold. ââ¬Å"Are those still around?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yup. There's actually a couple of them in Seattle.â⬠In fact, one was even nearby, less than a fifteen-minute walk away. As we went, however, Bastien wouldn't stop worrying about the Dana thing. It drove me crazy. I hated her too, believe me, but I couldn't figure out what was making this such a maniacal obsession for him. Fortunately, the piano bar was just wacky enough to distract him ââ¬â as I'd hoped it would be. We ate yummy bar food and drank froofy drinks like Midori martinis and Sex on the Beach. Meanwhile, dueling pianists sang everything from Eminem to Barry Manilow. As the evening passed, getting a request played cost more and more money. However, the patrons grew drunker and drunker, so they didn't mind putting the cash down. Knowing this in advance, I had brought a stack of bills, and Bastien and I took great amusement in seeing just how well the piano players could keep up with our increasingly older and more obscure requests. Bastien and I sang along beautifully. Shape-shifting, in addition to so many other benefits, could modify one's voice and vocal cords. The piano players had an astounding knowledge of our requests, and we were so impressed ââ¬â and drunk ââ¬â by the end of the night that we gave them a hefty tip. Before we could leave, however, Bastien made me wait to hear one more request. ââ¬Å"I slapped a fifty down with it,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"They've got to play it soon. I picked it just for you.â⬠ââ¬Å"If it's ââ¬ËSuperfreak,' I walk,â⬠I warned. He laughed. ââ¬Å"You'll know it when you hear it. It reminded me of you and your writer. ââ¬Å" Sure enough, I immediately knew which song his silly sense of humor had led him to. The smile cracking his face was sort of a giveaway too. Pulling half of me onto his lap, he sang along loudly with Fiona Apple's lyrics: ââ¬Å"I've been a bad, bad girl I've been careless With a delicate man And it's a sad, sad world When a girl will break a boy Just because she can. ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"You're truly a creature of hell,â⬠I told him, trying to wiggle away. ââ¬Å"You know that, don't you?â⬠ââ¬Å"I just tell it like it is.â⬠He held onto me and kept singing. ââ¬Å"Heaven help me For the way I am Save me from These evil deeds Before I get them doneâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ When we finally left the bar, both of us laughing and humming, we passed a group of girls even more drunk than us. A few of them gave Bastien open looks of invitation, and I glanced at him expectantly. He shook his head. ââ¬Å"Too easy. Besides, I'd rather go home with you. So to speak.â⬠He walked me back toward my apartment, holding my arm as he had once done when social mores dictated it for anyone of good breeding. The pavement was slick from earlier rain, and a moist chill hung in the air. Not far away, the Space Needle gleamed watchfully above the nearby buildings; it would have Christmas lights on it soon. Bastien tightened his hold on my arm and turned his gaze absentmindedly toward the cloudy sky for a while before looking over at me. â⬠Fleur ,do you want to know why I'm so gung-ho about this Dana business?â⬠I willed myself to sober up, suspecting something big was about to come. ââ¬Å"You mean other than your righteous fury at her?â⬠He smiled gently and looked down at the pavement, watching our feet. ââ¬Å"I'm in trouble. Big trouble.â⬠He sighed. ââ¬Å"You ever heard of a demon named Barton?â⬠ââ¬Å"No. Should I have?â⬠ââ¬Å"Maybe. He works in Chicago. Very high up. Very powerful. He's one of those who expects ââ¬Ëfavors' from his staff.â⬠I nodded in understanding. It was one of the occupational hazards succubi and incubi faced, and probably something else Seth would be happier not knowing about. As workers in the sex industry, so to speak, our demonic supervisors often thought we wouldn't mind one more ââ¬Å"customer.â⬠Many saw it as our duty. Whatever his other failings, Jerome at least had never demanded anything of that nature from me. ââ¬Å"Soâ⬠¦anyway, Barton has this succubus named Alessandra. Relatively new. You know, a century or so. Beautiful. She has as good an eye for exquisite physical detail as you. And she's bright. Wicked sense of humor. Outgoing.â⬠I stared at him in astonishment. ââ¬Å"Are you in love, Bastien?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, but I was ââ¬â am ââ¬â very attracted to her. Hard not to be. We got to know each other, and well, one thing sort of led to anotherâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"As it often does with you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠he admitted ruefully. ââ¬Å"But let me tell you, it was amazing. That womanâ⬠¦wow.â⬠ââ¬Å"So how are you in trouble?â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, the thing is, Barton's kind of possessive about his people. He expected Alessandra's body to be exclusively for his use ââ¬â mortal business aside, of course.â⬠ââ¬Å"And he found out?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. He turned unbelievably jealous.â⬠Contempt filled Bastien's voice. ââ¬Å"Stupid emotion for our kind. Of course, demon or no, I suppose he might have had reason to feel insecure knowing his girlfriend had been with a sex-master like myself. I mean, once you go Bastienâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Keep telling the story, ego-master. What happened?â⬠ââ¬Å"Wellâ⬠¦to say he was pissed off would be an understatement. Honestly, I don't think I'd be enjoying your lovely company today if Janelle hadn't done some serious intervening.â⬠Janelle was Bastien's archdemoness in Detroit. ââ¬Å"But mostly she just protected me from physical torture. Everything else is a mess. My career is in shambles. Barton has powerful friends, and Janelle's made it clear she's not going to cover my ass anymore.â⬠We had reached my building and stood outside it now. He ran a hand through his dark curls, face suddenly weary. ââ¬Å"I'm on everyone's shit list all of a sudden. Plans are already in motion to transfer me somewhere else, and I know it's going to be horrific. Like Guam. Or Omaha. That's why I need this Dana thing. A big hit like this ââ¬â a public humiliation for the other side. It'll put me on top again. They won't be able to punish me, not if I've got a takedown like that on my record.â⬠I started to understand his obsession with the radio host. ââ¬Å"But the takedown isn't exactly taking.â⬠ââ¬Å"I don't know what else to do. I've tried all the old tricks, all the textbook moves plus a few exclusive Bastien moves. None of it's working.â⬠I reached out to him. ââ¬Å"You might have to accept that she's got a strong will,Bas.It happens.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know.â⬠He sounded so miserable, it broke my heart. ââ¬Å"Hey, come on. Don't give up the fight yet. I taught you everything you know, remember? We'll find a way out of this. We'll get that wench wet yet.â⬠He laughed and brushed a finger against my cheek. ââ¬Å"You always make me feel better when I'm around you, you know that? It's one of the wonderful things about you. That and ââ¬â if the rumors are true ââ¬â your mouth. ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"The rumors are true, and I'm going to help you with this, you'll see. Besides, nothing else works on her, there's always hard liquor, right?â⬠ââ¬Å"Ah yes, the old standby.â⬠He hugged me tightly and kissed each cheek. ââ¬Å"Good night, my sweet. Thanks for a lovely evening.â⬠I kissed him back. ââ¬Å"Anytime.â⬠I had my hand on the door handle when I thought of something. ââ¬Å"Hey, Bastien?â⬠He turned from where he'd been walking away down the sidewalk. ââ¬Å"Yes?â⬠ââ¬Å"Why'd you do it?â⬠ââ¬Å"Do what?â⬠ââ¬Å"Alessandra. You must have known how Barton felt about her, right?â⬠ââ¬Å"I did.â⬠ââ¬Å"So why risk it?â⬠He looked at me like he could scarcely believe I had to ask. ââ¬Å"Because I could. Because she was beautiful and wonderful and I wanted her.â⬠I knew better than to argue with that. It was textbook incubus logic. Smiling, I went inside.
